Bax always fantasized something remarkable would happen in his life. So when a decrepit man with glowing purple eyes offers him a ring intended for his estranged father, Bax accepts.
The ring speaks to Bax in a dream, tempting him with a vision of a powerful djinn. Desperate to make his fantasies a reality, Bax unleashes a creature called Ifrit, but soon learns this djinn isn't what the ring led him to believe. Feeding off the depths of his subconscious, the sinister demon fulfills what he thinks Bax wants by manipulating, threatening, and murdering. With everyone he loves in danger and a trail of crimes pointing back at him, Bax must scramble to solve the puzzle that will banish Ifrit forever.
Review: “I just accepted a gift from some creeper outside my building. Something every little kid knew better than to do. Who knows where that ring came from?”
The ring looked pretty worthless to Bax…until, one day, he rubs it and some genie shows up.
“The old man gave me a winning lottery ticket after all—a short, hairy lottery ticket.” What more could a high school kid ask for?
How can it serve? Well, obviously, Bax had lots of wishes he could think of. Thing was that this smelly genie couldn’t grant any of them…at least, not in the traditional sense for a genie. For instance, apparently, he can fetch things like a dog—things like a hundred-dollar bill from a bank that’s closed.
“We found a thief who looks like the offspring of a monkey and a dog.”
But what if you wanted another genie with more power—one that could do MORE for you? But, of course, nothing came that easy. Now there’s a second genie that apparently kills without a wish. Uh-oh!
Story had a simple and engaging narrative with a clever wit, especially when the character talks of his humiliation at school and the jocks he hates. Stories about genies and wishes that go awry are always compelling, and this book certainly delivers. It was interesting how the kids tried to figure out this whole “djinn” thing through questions and internet searches. Also, Bax’s dreams seem to be a key as well. Story was compelling for the most part, but there was some lag and some trivial scenes.
Though this isn’t your traditional genie story with fantastic magic and all, it still gives off that warning of “Be careful what you wish for.”
“The most powerful wishes aren’t said with words.”
Deep down, this was what Bax wanted—to get rid of the dumb jock and take his pretty girlfriend. Will Bax and his friends be able to stop the monster that he created before it kills again?
Story blends juvenile hijinks with classic horror and supernatural folklore. A great read!
