A writer’s struggle to write
something is a battle every author knows too well. Becca couldn’t be more
discouraged at this point. Somehow, she finds it in her to start writing a new
story.
It takes a while to get to the
story as a whole. Right away, you wonder about those black hearts randomly
placed in certain locations. What was the deal with that? What was Becca guilty
of?
The lagging areas include the
dream sequences and the story within the story. By chapter 15, we see that
“someone is acting out the crimes we wrote about.” Even at this point, I
couldn’t really get that into the story. Figuring who of the writers in the writer’s
group was the killer was pretty interesting, but it wasn’t enough to compensate
for the lengthy and mild read as a whole. For crying out loud, we don’t even
get to see what Becca’s mental deal was.
“Not My Mother” turned out to
be way better than this. An okay read.
