They
had been travelling for almost two full days. A father, his two sons, their
wives, and three grandchildren made up the party. First the flight took them
from Frankfurt directly to Vancouver, from where they had rented a minivan for
the rest of the trip. Twelve hours cooped up together in the van brought them
to this place. A friend had once extolled the virtues of this seemingly out of
the way haven. A hidden gem, he had called it. He had gone on for days about
the place, the people, and the wildlife. But mostly he had been effusive in
praise for the resort. He had failed to mention just how far out of the way it
was. The drive out of Vancouver wasn’t much different from the crowded Autobahn
of Granpapa’s younger days, but as the route went further north and then west,
the similarity to anything they had known before gradually faded.
