Excerpt One:
Charlotte took a deep breath while examining Hannibal. Her
eyes scanned him top to bottom. He felt the way he did in the airport when they
put him in the chamber and told him to raise his arms overhead. Was she staring
into his eyes, or wondering about his dark glasses?
Were his black suit and white shirt inappropriate for the
season?
“Ben told me that you were very good at finding people,”
Charlotte said. “And that you were trustworthy and above all discreet.”
“Yeah, and he probably figured you’d be more comfortable
with a black investigator.”
She grinned. “Yes, there is that. You wear those shades all
the time?”
“Unless I’m asked not to.”
“Well then, would you mind?” She leaned in. He removed his
sunglasses and slipped them into his suit jacket pocket. She leaned even
closer.
“Blue? No, I think hazel eyes,” she said. “Where’d you get
them?”
“You’d have to talk to my parents about that.”

The plot of Subtle Felonies is driven by a missing person’s
case. A wealthy athlete has disappeared and private eye Hannibal Jones is hired
to find him. When a ransom note turns up the family contacts the police to make
a payoff. A location is established for the money drop - a gas station in a
suburban area near two major highways. Police position themselves to make sure
the criminals can’t escape.
Although he is told to sit this one out, Hannibal Jones also
positions himself along one of the possible escape routes. The exciting scene
begins when one of the criminals pulls up in a hot sports car, snatches the bag
of money and takes off. After a thrilling high speed chase it looks as if the
police have the kidnapper trapped when the car they are pursuing suddenly
disappears.
Only Hannibal Jones is able to detect where the vanished car
actually went. He is able to track it down only to find himself in deadly
danger. What he finds at the end of that drive - a dead body that is NOT the
kidnapped man - changes everyone’s view of who the real villains may be and the
complex plot they are all involved in.

ReplyDeleteGood morning, and thank you for featuring my novel today! I can't wait to see what your visitors think of the scene I described.
ReplyDeleteDo you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?
ReplyDeleteNot in the traditional sense, Traci but it is a kind of zen activity. My mind goes into an almost meditative state where I tune out everything else and enter an alternate reality of my own making. It also forces me to look inward because, to create realistic characters I need to be in touch with my own emotions, values and beliefs. Thank you for asking such a thought-provoking question.
DeleteI would enjoy reading this. Thanks for sharing.
