Q&A with Donna Del Oro, author of UNDERCOVER LIES

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW BOOK, UNDERCOVER LIES.

A:  Is it ever too late to punish those responsible for WW II war crimes? A young Jewish-American FBI agent faces this question when he goes undercover in 2005 to investigate a possible WW II Nazi spy who was never caught.

Blurb:

Jake Bernstein is a little baffled when he’s called upon in his position as an FBI analyst to assist Britain’s MI5 with an investigation. Turns out they suspect an aged American woman of having been a Nazi spy in WWII Great Britain. One who potentially cost many people their lives and who was never identified and arrested. It so happens the old woman and her granddaughter are taking a two-week tour of Great Britain—and they’ve secured Jake a place on that tour as an undercover agent. Little does he know how dangerous this assignment will become!

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE TITLE FOR THIS BOOK?

A: It seemed to portray the protagonist’s conflicting roles as he investigates while undercover.

WHAT DRIVES YOUR CHARACTERS IN YOUR STORY?

A: Jake’s a professional FBI agent and devoted to obtaining justice for all the victims of the Nazis during WW II.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS A PIVOTAL SCENE IN YOUR BOOK AND WHY?

A: One pivotal scene is when Meg, the old lady’s granddaughter, finally realizes that Jake is not a fellow tourist and that he’s investigating her grandmother for war crimes. Another is when Jake gets irrefutable proof that Meg’s grandmother is not who she has claimed to be.

IF YOUR BOOK WERE TO BE MADE INTO A MOVIE, WHO WOULD BE YOUR CAST?

A: Austin Butler as Jake, Margot Robbie as Meg. I’m not sure who would be cast as the crafty, sly grandmother.

WHAT CRITERIA DID YOU USE WHEN SELECTING THE COVER FOR YOUR BOOK?

A: The protagonist had to be tall, dark and handsome (ha!) and Meg had to be beautiful and blonde.

WAS THERE A MESSAGE IN YOUR BOOK THAT YOU WERE TRYING TO CONVEY?

A: Undercover intelligence work requires nerves of steel and the ability to be a good liar.

Also, that WW II crimes should continue to be investigated and punished to the full extent of the law.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS A WRITER?

A: I love the research but it is time-consuming.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR NEW WRITERS?

A: You have to love storytelling and the work it takes to make the facts come alive!
